FAQ - D12492 Research diet 2,5HS 60% KCAL fat
What macronutrient profile does D12492 provide?
What macronutrient profile does D12492 provide?
D12492 supplies 60 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 20 kcal% carbohydrate at 5.24 kcal/g, with the fat fraction primarily from lard.
Which low-fat control diet is matched to D12492?
Which low-fat control diet is matched to D12492?
D12450J is formulated to match the sucrose calories of D12492, so that low-fat and high-fat groups consuming equal calories also consume equal sucrose. D12450B is used for general control purposes.
How should D12492 be stored?
How should D12492 be stored?
Store cool and dry. Because of the high lard content, frozen storage is recommended where the protocol allows.

Product Instructions
Feed ad libitum in DIO protocols, according to facility guidelines and study design.
D12492 is a purified high-fat diet from Research Diets used as the reference 60 kcal% fat formula in diet-induced obesity (DIO) research. The diet delivers 60 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 20 kcal% carbohydrate, with an energy density of 5.24 kcal/g. D12492 is part of the Research Diets DIO (Diet-Induced Obesity) series and is the most widely cited high-fat reference within that series.
Formulation
- Defined-ingredient purified formula based on casein, with the fat fraction provided primarily by lard supplemented with soybean oil.
- Carbohydrate fraction from maltodextrin 10 and sucrose; the diet does not include corn starch.
- Color-coded blue for visual distinction in multi-diet study designs.
Use in DIO models
D12492 is one of the most widely cited high-fat diets in rodent metabolic research and is used to induce obesity, insulin resistance and related phenotypes in mice and rats. The matched low-fat control is D12450J, formulated to keep sucrose calories aligned between the high-fat and control groups, while D12450B is used when a general low-fat reference is preferred.
Storage
Because of the elevated lard content, frozen storage is recommended where compatible with the protocol; otherwise store cool and dry.
Standard delivery is in cases of 12.5 kg, divided into 2.5 kg heat sealed foil bags. The diet can be modified on request and is also available irradiated. Contact our specialists for advice at researchdiets@brogaarden.eu.
