Compassionate care for reliable results - since 1980
Brogaarden has been around long enough to remember when horse-drawn carts were normal traffic and "pet food" came in brown paper sacks, not designer bags.
Over the years, the Hjort-Petersen family turned a traditional feed and grain business into a specialist company, working with nutrition for everything from horses and companion animals to zoo and research animals.
What has never changed is the basic idea that good feed and good care belong together.
Around 1980, a young stable master at Nordisk Gentofte — today part of Novo Nordisk — had a slightly unconventional thought: perhaps the best way to reduce stress in laboratory animals was simply to give them a better life. He started experimenting with environmental enrichment and went shopping for nesting material, toys and other odd bits of equipment in a small, slightly old-fashioned shop in Gentofte: Brogaarden.
Some weekends he brought along his 10-12-year-old son, who earned pocket money helping his father with the animals and tagging along to the store.
What began as practical tinkering gradually turned into structured trials, and the hypothesis held up: animals that live under better conditions are less stressed and give more reliable results. In spirit, those early experiments were a forerunner to what later became formalized as the 3R principles: replacing, reducing and refining the use of animals in research.
Today, that boy, Rolf Momberg, who went to help his father in the weekends, is one of Brogaarden's two owners — and still deeply involved in laboratory animal science through Brogaarden's services. The company now works closely with leading international partners on diets, bedding and environmental enrichment for research animals, but the basic approach is unchanged: listen carefully to the people who work with the animals every day, and turn their challenges into practical, well-documented solutions.
In that sense, Brogaarden is still the same neighbourhood shop in Gentofte — just with a slightly larger neighbourhood and a few more animal species on the customer list.
