How does D12450J differ from D12450B?
How does D12450J differ from D12450B?
D12450J carries fewer sucrose calories than D12450B (~7 kcal% versus ~35 kcal%) and is matched to D12492, while D12450B is the original general low-fat reference.
Why is sucrose matching important in DIO studies?
Why is sucrose matching important in DIO studies?
Sucrose matching prevents sucrose intake from co-varying with fat between groups, so observed effects can be attributed to dietary fat rather than sucrose load.
Which species is D12450J intended for?
Which species is D12450J intended for?
D12450J is formulated for laboratory rats and mice in metabolic and DIO research.

Feed ad libitum according to facility guidelines and study protocol.
D12450J is a purified low-fat control diet from Research Diets, formulated to match the sucrose calories of the 60 kcal% fat DIO diet D12492. Macronutrient distribution is 10 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 70 kcal% carbohydrate, with an energy density of 3.85 kcal/g. Together with D12492, this diet forms a matched pair within the Research Diets DIO (Diet-Induced Obesity) series.
Formulation
- Casein-based purified formula with defined ingredients.
- Carbohydrate fraction from corn starch, maltodextrin 10 and a reduced amount of sucrose; sucrose calories are aligned with those of D12492 (~7 kcal% sucrose).
- Fat fraction from soybean oil and lard.
- Color-coded blue for visual distinction in multi-diet study designs.
Use as a sucrose-matched control
D12450J is the standard sucrose-matched low-fat control for studies using D12492 as the high-fat arm. By aligning sucrose calories across the two diets, it isolates fat content as the experimental variable when groups consume equivalent total energy.
Standard delivery is in cases of 12.5 kg, divided into 2.5 kg heat sealed foil bags. The diet can be modified on request and is also available irradiated. Contact our specialists for advice at researchdiets@brogaarden.eu.
